By this stage of the year, many people may have dumped their new years goals and resolutions, or may simply be finding themselves in the middle of a slump, unable to continue with the plans they’ve set up.
Maybe you’ve bit off more than you can chew, or maybe your circumstances have changed and you just can’t be bothered with certain aspects of your ‘new year, new me,’ but dropping your goals seems like giving up and failing.

Wellness and Lifestyle Coach Gillian O’Gorman, from The Wellness Lounge in Limerick chatted to Extra.ie about her top tips in disciplining and figuring out the best ways to achieve goals are.
Goal Setting and Resistances
When we’re trying to get ourselves out of slumps, Gillian’s top tip is to go back to the drawing board, figure out what’s holding you back, and remind yourself why you set out to accomplish the goal — what are we getting out of the goal?
‘If you feel that you’ve dropped off on a goal, there needs to be a kind of self assessment as to, “Why I have dropped off the goal?”‘ Gillian explained.
Perhaps circumstances have changed, or the reason behind setting a certain goal wasn’t in line with you — when there’s no reason or motivation, you’ll quickly find you stop working towards the goal.
‘In the new year, there can be a lot of repetitive goals — people do the fitness goals and the diet goals. Goals don’t have to be in those areas, there might be something that you need outside of that,’ said Gillian.
Another reason for resistance is we’ve set yourself a goal that doesn’t align with your lifestyle, therefore is unachievable — it’s simply impossible to achieve.
For example, if you’re a person that works long, unsocial hours, or you travel a lot and you decide you want to go to the gym five times a week, it’s almost impossible to achieve.
‘You’ve set this goal, and it’s not really a realistic goal, because you’re in the car a lot; you’re travelling; you’re doing night-work… so it doesn’t actually support the lifestyle that you have,’ Gillian reasoned.
